About heartburn

When gastric contents flow backward from the stomach into the esophagus, nerve fibers in the esophagus are stimulated, resulting in the burning pain known as heartburn. While heartburn is most commonly described as a burning pain in the middle of the chest, patients may experience it in other ways:

  • Starting high in the abdomen
  • Extending up into the neck
  • Extending to the back
  • Feeling a sharp or pressure-like sensation
