RECOMMEND PEPCID® (FAMOTIDINE)
PEPCID AC® and Zantac® are both approved for heartburn relief; however, PEPCID® contains famotidine. Approved by the FDA since 1986, PEPCID® is still available in stores.
HOW PEPCID® WORKS DIFFERENTLY
PEPCID® is a histamine-2 blocker that works fast and lasts all day.* It contains famotidine,
which helps relieve heartburn by reducing the amount of acid in the stomach.
There are three types of heartburn medications:
Neutralize existing stomach acid but don’t stop the production of more acid.
Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs)
Shut down pumps that release acid. OTC PPIs are not indicated for the prevention of heartburn, and may take 1-4 days to become fully effective.
When gastric contents flow backward from the stomach into the esophagus, nerve fibers in the esophagus are stimulated, resulting in the burning pain known as heartburn. While heartburn is most commonly described as a burning pain in the middle of the chest, patients may experience it in other ways:
- Starting high in the abdomen
- Extending up into the neck
- Extending to the back
- Feeling a sharp or pressure-like sensation
